Cross-Curricular Skills in P6/7

25th Sep 2020

Our Primary 6 and 7 children have been thoroughly enjoying getting to grips with their first World Around Us topic of the year - The Famine. It has been an eye-opening experience, studying our Irish history from so many years ago.

We have linked our topic study with our class novel - a classic - Under The Hawthorn Tree and we have been cross-linking our knowledge of the Famine with the trials and tribulations of the main characters Eily, Michael and Peggy. We have got our thinking caps on and put together diary entries written from the point of view of one of the main characters to explore life during the late 1840s for these children. They wrote such emotive, detailed pieces to convey feelings of fear, hunger and uncertainty during The Famine.

Well done boys and girls! Also, a huge thank you to Libraries NI and their fantastic online book service - this ensured we could use our ICT skills AND study such a fantastic book during whole class guided reading sessions.
